Tripod or no Tripod

This is a really dumb question I know but what are the benefits of using a Tripod?  I have heard of several "Pro's" taking their Tripod everywhere they go and never taking it off.  Can anyone explain the benefits and if so what is the best type of Tripod to get?

Hey Jeremy:

Tripods are useful if you are taking pictures of action or nature or products and have the luxury of time to set it up properly. I hardly use a tripod, but I also have a 70-200mm 2.8 VR II that I use to shoot action and nature. It is very fast and the VR saves me from having to lug around a tripod. I own a Bogen tripod and a cheap tripod that I got a as a freebie. I use the cheap tripod because it is so much lighter. I would definitely suggest going for a carbon fiber tripod because weight is an issue on long days. If you don't do any of the kind of shooting I mentioned but still want something to help steady your shots, I would suggest looking into a monopod.
